Visitor Visas

Foreign citizens who wish to visit the United States temporarily must obtain a visa in order to travel to the country.  Individuals coming to the U.S as tourists, to visit friends or family, for medical treatment, or to conduct business, must have a visitor’s visa.  B-1 visas will be issued to those coming into the U.S. for business purposes, while B-2 visas will be given to individuals coming for pleasure or medical treatment.  These non-immigrant visas are typically issued for a period between 3 months and 10 years.  Sometimes visa extensions can be approved for stays that need to exceed the previous specified time.

People who apply for visitor visas have to show that they qualify under provisions of immigration and Nationality Act.  This means that they must prove that their intentions in coming to the U.S. are temporary, and they do not intend to reside in the U.S. on a permanent basis.  Visitor visa applicants must prove that they have a residence in their native country which they do not intend to abandon, that they wish to enter the U.S. for a specifically limited amount of time, and that they are entering the U.S to conduct business, tourism, or medical treatment.
