Academic Student Visas
Non-immigrants wishing to pursue academic studies or language training programs will need to obtain academic student visas, called F visas. The F visa is a temporary visa for academic students in colleges, universities, seminaries, conservatories academic high schools, or other academic institutions. Technical students, or those seeking vocational education will need to obtain M visas, not F visas. There are two types of F visas, F-1 visas and F-2 visas. F-1 visas are only given through academic institutions, while F-2 visas are given to the families or dependents of F-1 students. F-2 visa holders are prohibited from any form of compensated employment, however, minor children are permitted to attend public schools.
Students with F-1 visas are typically not permitted to work in the U.S. without authorization from Citizenship & Immigration Services, unless the employment is on campus for 20 hours or less per week. Work authorization may also be granted for Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training. Practical training includes things like internships, which directly correlate to the student’s education, and as such these activities are often permitted.
